This paper aeroplane launcher design was created along with five other people, studying either Mechanical Engineering or Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The task was to design a launcher to fire six planes at angles of 0°, 30° and -30° in the horizontal plane, without human interaction past pressing the initial ‘Go’ button. This was accomplished using a crank mechanism for the rotation, and a gap dropping mechanism to allow for the precise timing needed to reach the tolerances required for the angles.
The project allowed us to firstly gain a greater understanding of the design process and problem solving, along with the use of CAD software (Solid Edge), but also highlighted the importance of working in a team and the ways communication can be improved using internet based collaboration tools, as well as the dividing of project work in order to complete a solution to a problem.
